How and when will i receive the program information packet?
An information packet will be uploaded to the ALA Arkansas Girls State website in April containing information regarding when and where to check-in, what to pack, dress code, and other pertinent information. You will also receive a digital copy of the packet via the email address submitted during the registration process.
When will i find out my city and dorm assignment?
You will be provided with your city, dorm, and room number at check-in on Sunday, May 25. You will be provided with your mock political party affiliation by email approximately 1-2 weeks before camp.
When and where do I check-in?
You will check in at the Ganus Activities Complex on the campus of Harding University in Searcy, AR at 12:00PM. No early entry will be allowed. Only the delegate and one parent/guardian will be admitted into the building to complete the registration process due to the large number of people. DO NOT BRING LUGGAGE OR PERSONAL BELONGINGS TO REGISTRATION. There is a $5 on-site registration fee, and we will NOT be able to make change. Family and/or friends will be allowed into the dorm to help you unpack, make up your bed, and get settled for the week, and all guests will be asked to leave by 1:30PM for the first city meeting.
Can I check-in late, check-out, or leave early?
Please do not ask to arrive late or leave the program early. If you fail to attend the entire session for any reason, you will not receive credit for completing the program including the ALA AR Girls State pin or certificate. Delegates are not allowed to check-out for any portion of the program. If you are not able to attend the ENTIRE session, please notify your school or sponsoring ALA unit so that another student may attend in your place. If, due to illness or family emergency, your parent/guardian must follow the check-out process, and you are not allowed to return.
What should I bring to wear?
We require that our delegates maintain appropriate standards of dress and appearance that are respectful of both our organization and the values of our host campus, Harding University. We have a dress code that will be strictly enforced, and those in violation will be asked to change into appropriate clothing or be dismissed from the program. Inauguration on Wednesday night and the Arkansas Capitol visit on Thursday are business casual, and dresses, skirts, and pant suits are preferred in accordance with the dress code. Heals are discouraged due to large amounts of walking.
ALA Arkansas Girls State Dress Code:
- Women’s tops must have at least 2-inch shoulder straps and must not reveal cleavage or midriff. No halter tops or open back tops.
- Skirts, dresses, and shorts must be a no more than 3 inches above the knee. No rips or tears in jeans that are above the knee.
- Undergarments must not be visible. Sleepwear must not be worn as outerwear.
- When wearing form fitting attire, such as leggings, delegates must wear a top that is mid-thigh or longer.
- Bathing suits are not permitted.
- Shoes must be worn at all times while on campus.
Will there be ALA Arkansas girls state merchandise?
Delegates will be able to purchase an assortment of ALA Arkansas Girls State items such as clothing, stickers, and graduation cords. There will also be an opportunity to purchase various photos from the week. If you forget to bring something, other personal items will be available such as toiletries and snacks. These items are all optional, and no money is required through the week. Payment methods accepted include cash and debit/credit cards.
What should I pack?
You will need to bring anything you need for a dorm room for the week including twin sheets, a blanket, pillow, towels, washcloths, toiletries (including hand soap), clothes hangers, clothing/shoes, chargers.
Can i bring my own campaign materials?
No, delegates cannot bring their own campaign materials or supplies. All delegates will be given the opportunity to purchase the same materials from the store.
What are meals like and what if I have a food allergy?
Meals are served in the Harding University student cafeteria with various options at each meal. Breakfast includes options such as eggs and sausage, cereal, waffles, pastries. Lunch and dinner include hamburgers, pizza, a variety of “hot line” options that change daily, salad bar, sandwich bar, and various desserts. A vegetarian and gluten free option will be available at each meal. Delegates with special medical restrictions should identify that need in their registration process.
