What is American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation?

A week-long event hosted in Washington D.C. giving participants a firsthand experience with practical insight into how the federal government works. Two students are chosen from American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs and are known as “senators.” The senators participate in mock legislature by writing and submitting bills and resolutions, debating these in the Senate chamber of the United States Capitol, electing officials such as president and vice president, making connections with future leaders from across the nation, and experiencing field trips throughout the Washington D.C. area (Capitol Hill, monuments, and Arlington National Cemetery).

How do I get selected to attend girls nation?

Girls Nation is a program of the American Legion Auxiliary that instructs delegates on the workings of our national government. During the week of American Legion Auxiliary Arkansas Girls State, two delegates will be chosen to represent Arkansas as Senators at Girls Nation, which is held in Washington, D.C. in July. The dates for American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation this year are July 18–25, 2026.

Any delegate wishing to be considered for Girls Nation will need to write a bill on the national level that reflects her interests and passions, limited to a single page on a Word document (no Google Docs), and email the bill submission as an attachment to the American Legion Auxiliary Arkansas Girls State Staff email address by Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 8:00 A.M. with the subject “Girls Nation Bill.”

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation committee will review bill submissions. Throughout the week, delegates are identified based on standout participation in the various activities of the American Legion Auxiliary Arkansas Girls State program and will participate in the final interview process on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Harding University. The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Committee will select two delegates and one alternate to represent our program, and this decision is final.
